New toKnitting - Yarn Question - ball or leave in pkg
Good afternoon! I just bought my first package of yarn and wonder if I am supposed to leave it in the package or make it into a ball. I remember watching my Nana crochet when I was little and she always made hers into a ball. Is this just personal preference, or is one easier t work with than the other?

If it's already in a wound skein, I usually find the yarn in the center and use it as a center pull skein. Sometimes that's hard to find, though. Usually one end of the skein has a piece from the outside tucked in. I reach my fingers in the other end, deep, and pinch. Hopefully not too much comes out. If a lot comes out, I just wrap that around the outside of the skein and when it gets used up, I'm pulling from the center.

If it's in a hank, then you have to wind it or it will get tangled.

i think it depends on what kind of package you are working with. In skeins you CAN leave it if you prefer, though i always seem to end up winding them up into new balls after pulling out the center to find the end of the string.

if they are in hanks like this then you have to wind them into a ball of some sort or you will end up with a knot. when you wind it you will want an extra set of hands, chair back, yarn swift, something to hold the yarn so it won't knot up.

TY - I found the piece in the center and will try it that way for now. Off to watch the videos and see if I can figure this out!

Honestly I have done both and like others already said, it depends on what kind of skein it is.

I had one that I would have normally just left but it got REALLY tangled for some reason I ended up having to untangle it all and then do a ball.
