Double strand knit

A pattern calls for double strand knit. How do I do this? Do I unwind the whole roll of yarn and then wind it doubling the yarn?

You could do that if you have a ball winder. If you don't, you can take one strand from the inside and one from the outside and knit with them held together as one. Or if you have more than one skein, just use a strand from each.

I've actually heard NOT to roll two strands into one ball, because the strands end up working at different rates, even if they're the exact same yarn. I just finished a project knit with two strands of yarn, and I know that this is true just from experience. The green always worked faster than the purple, just because it did. So, I would either wind half the skein into a ball, then the other half, or do Ingrid's thing of one from either end of the skein, or do two skeins.

oh my...I was even using the same COLOR, same yarn, and it was a MESS...

I ALWAYS roll into one ball when double-stranding. Ive never had the problems you've mentioned.

In fact, I had more problems using the outside/inside strands...they kept getting all twisted around each other.

Maybe it has something to do with using a ball winder as opposed to rolling by hand?

I've used one strand from two skeins and that's worked well... until I realized that the yardage needed was from 3 skeins and I had already used two.

So I ended up doing Ingrid's suggestion of using one strand from the inside and outside and vowed to never say anything about it on here... I thought it was wrong and would cause a mess (which it didn't for me), but since Ingrid said it's ok, I feel much better!
