I have to voice my agreement with the periwinkle, lime and buttermilk combo. I think those colors would be lovely together.

Also, for what it's worth, I started knitting with Homespun, so I don't see that Crayon'll be too much trouble. It just takes a little attention is all.
Current WIPs:
Wrapigan, Sea Urchin Sweater, Envy the Owling, Easy Triangle Shawl

Recent FOs:
Brandon Handwarmers, Several felted Boogas, Not-Malabrigo Handwarmers, Malabrigo Hat

Up Next:
Monkey socks, Shawl for Jeanette, Scarf for Mykael

Well - when I was pregnant my one stipulation to anyone knitting for me was 'NO PASTELS'!!!! I hate them with a passion and always wanted nice 'non-baby' colours which were virtually non-existant!

So for non-gender knowledge I would go for any colour except pink or blue .... :D

My DS's blankets were bright orange and lime green fleece and their sheets were dark blue, orange and lime green too!

Keep pastels away from me :D
Clapotis - Malabrigo - Rich Chocolate
Dream Swatch - Blackthorne Fibers - KH
Askew - Rowan Summer Tweed - Rush - well... off the needles but needs to be blocked and seamed
Monkey socks - Lisa Souza - Mars Quake

Anthropologie inspired capelet - mmmmMalabrigo chunky - hummingbird
Simple Knitted Bodice - Glampyre - KP Andrean Silk - Olive
Rowan - Hero Jumper - Rowan Denim
MY MASTER'S SOCK 2 - Lisa Souza - Lime & Violet

I'm toftie

I agree with sticking to primary colors for gender neutral blanket. Also I like crayon. I made a hoodie for my dd with it. It wasn't bad to work with at all.
