is the worsted weight universal?
I just went out and bought Phentex wrosted acrylic knitting yarn, and it seems awfully thick. I don't know what type of yarn I was using for my practice pieces (threw the wrapper away, so I dont know the gauge) but I do remember that it said to use size 10 needles and the yarn is MUCH thinner.

The wrapper says:
Phentex worsted
100% acrylic
knitting worsted weight
18x24 (which is the gauge i need for my sweater), on size 8 needles

edit: I'm currently working on gauge so it actually may work. but i can't get over how thick it is!

That gauge sounds like it's within the worsted range, maybe an aran weight. Some yarns are much denser than others, that that plays a role in how they feel, too. As long as you're getting gauge, though, it should work.

It could be also that the Phentex you bought is an unspun yarn. They make an acrylic that's spun, but the nylon isn't. The nylon feels thin, but does knit up like a worsted... it's just scratchy as all get out. That's the stuff that I think everyone and their dog had a pair knitted by their grandma.
