Increasing on purl rows???
New at this....attempting to knit the Heart Shape Pillow on page 22 of the March issue of "Simply Knitting". At the beginning of pattern it instructs to work in 'stocking stitch' throughout....

Then the pattern reads partially as follows:

Row 1: Knit
Row 2: Purl
Inc 1 at beg and end of following 4 rows (12 sts)
Row 7: Knit
Row 8: Inc 1 a beg and end of this row (14 sts)
Row 9: Knit
Rows 10-17: Inc 1 at beg and end of each row (30 sts)
Row 18: Purl
Inc 1 a beg and end of next 2 rows.
Next row: Knit
Inc 1 a beg and end of next 3 row.
Next row: Knit
etc, etc, etc...

So, my question is....in what I've read about increasing, it should usually be done on a knit row. Is this instructing me to increase on purl rows also (since I was instructed at beginning to work in 'stocking stitch' throughout?) And if so, how in the world do I increase while purling?

Thanks

There's no rule about increasing only on a knit side. You can purl in the front and back of the first and last stitches.

Just purl as you would normally, but don't slide it off. Then put your needle into the back loop from left to right and purl again, then slide it off. It's a bit more awkward than kfb, but doable.
