pick up stitches and knit evenly

Hi there
My pattern reads that I have to pick up and knit evenly 83 sts along the straight edge, 50 sts along the shaped edge and 11 sts across the back of the neck.
I understand the question but have never picked up and knitted stitches I would welcome any advice you may have on how to do this.
