How to tighten figure-eight cast-on stitches on toe-up socks

Hello,

I am trying to knit my very first pair of socks using the toe-up "You're Putting Me On" http://tiajudy.com/putmeon.htm pattern. I've managed to do the figure-eight cast-on and complete the first few rounds. However, I am at a loss as to how to tighten up the loose cast-on stitches in the middle.

The pattern says, "Sometime after you've knitted a couple of rounds you will be able to tighten up the cast-on, using a crochet hook to work the slack toward the tail of the yarn."

Toe-up sock cast-on instructions on knitty.com (http://www.knitty.com/issuewinter02/FEATtiptoptoes.html) say, "The stitches in the middle of your work may be loose, but you can tighten them up a little by working the excess yarn towards one side after you have completed a couple of rounds."

I'm not sure how to do that; if someone could/would explain these instructions to me, I would greatly appreciate the help.

It's hard with out a picture, but the easiest way to do it is after you've done a couple of round, turn your little toe inside out. Then using a small crochet hook or the end of a dpn, pull on one of the pieces of yarn at the end opposite the tail and then continue down to the tail until all the slack is taken up. Like tightening shoe laces if that makes any sense.
