Garn Studio Pattern Help

I am making the following poncho.

The directions state:

Knit 2 rows garter sts back and forth on needle from mid front (= end of rows), continue knitting back and forth (= slit mid front) as follows: Knit stocking sts with the 2 outermost sts each side (mid front) in garter sts. At the same time, increase 4 sts on every other row (= from the right side) as follows: knit 4, 1 yo, 1 yo on each side of the middle 8 sts and 1 yo when there are 4 sts left on needle. On next row, knit yo’s to create holes.

I translate that to:


Knit first two rows garter stitch.

For the portion of the poncho that is from the neck to 8cm down, (I'm making the 12/18 mos. size).

RS rows:
k6, yo, k within 6 sts of end of row yo, k6

WS rows:
k2, purl to within 2 sts. of end of row and k2

I would appreciate any help!!

I think I would knit 4, yo, etc, until there are 4 stitches left on the needle. They're pretty specific with this.

I think the 'keep 2 in garter on the edges' is so they don't have to tell you to do it on the purl rows every time.

You are being asked to increase four stitches on every other row, not just two, four stitches from each edge. It wants you to knit 4, yo, figure out what the middle 8 stitches are and do 1 yo on either side of those middle 8 stitches (you can see those little eyelets on the photo, to the left and right center front) and also 1 yo when there are 4 stitches left on the needle.

I thought you were just trying to figure out if you should add the two garter edges to the pattern, or jus do the 4 on the knit side in addition to the increases, etc. If not, knitqueen's got you covered on the rest!

I think I figured it out. There are eyelets on the back of the ponch too. Later in the pattern it states:

Continue the increases, i.e. on each side of the middle 8 sts back and front.

The 'middle 8 stitches' are the eight stitches at the center of the back. Do you all agree with me?

Don't you think it's the 8 stitches at the center of the back and the front?

Yes, I'm sure of it. To make positively sure I am posting on the Garnstudio forum. But it only makes sense to increase on both the front and back to make it even.
