If my yarn is twisting on the needle what am I doing wrong? too tight??

The first few rows might twist around the needle and not mean anything at all. Just straighten them out. It could be the way you're holding the needle with the stitches in it. As it gets longer there shouldn't be a problem. If you're having trouble getting your needle into the stitches, then it's too tight.
