How do I know which needles to use for my gauge?

My pattern calls for 2 different size circs, another size for ribbing and a set of dpn. I'm knitting a pair of infant pants. How do I know which size needles I should be using to check the gauge. The legs are knit with 12 inch size 8 circs. Should I check my gauge using that needle size?

When patterns give a gauge, they usually specify which needles you should be getting that gauge on. Sometimes they're poorly written, though....
