sweater question

Okay I am doing a top down raglan pattern and am almost to the point that I need to divide the sleeves and co under the arms. How do I do that?
Do I take the stitches that will be the sleeves off the needles and keep them on waste yarn? I just can't seem to wrap my mind around this one. Thanks!

Yes, usually you put the sleeve stitches on waste yarn. Then you'll knit across the front, cast on stitches for the underarm in whatever way the pattern tells you, and then knit across the back. You'll be joining front to back under the armpits and the sleeves will be over them. Look at a shirt or sweater and it will enable you to picture it bettern than I described.
