Socks: which do you prefer, stockinette or ribbed?
Until I knit my Simply Lovely Lace Socks , I had only ever done socks in straight stockinette. I'm about to do some more socks for myself ( ) and had thought I'd do them in a 3x1 rib, b/c I had read that ribbed socks fit more snugly than stockinette. It's true that all my stockinette socks have had a little slouch in them. I'm torn b/c I've also been tempted to try a little simple fair isle on these socks, which I think looks better on stockinette (or am I wrong?).
Anyway, it makes me curious. What do the rest of you prefer, and why?

I must say, I do like the fit of a 2x2 ribbed sock...but, I LOVE knitting lacey socks, love wearing them, too, because they are so pretty
But, you can't beat the fit of a 2x2 ribbed sock...I like them both when the ribbing is taken down the instep of the sock and when the ribbing stops after the leg and the entire foot of the sock is knit in St st. Ahhhh, socks.....

I"m on my second pair of Caruso socks (found at Knitty) and I have to say they are the most comfortable socks I have ever put on my feet. The top of the sock is stockinette so it rolls down and then the leg and instep are done in a stranded pattern (*K1, ytf, slip 2, ytb*) I love the way they feel on my feet. The pattern seems to run fairly small (just a warning) Oh and I used Knitpicks' Dance (Tap) yarn. Very yummy socks!

I like to do a baby cable rib, just to make the sock a little more interesting. It's a ridiculously easy pattern. I found it in a Barbara Walker book, so I don't know whether or not it's legal to post it here.
I usually do a 2x2 rib for the cuff, 1.5-2" and then I personally like a 3x1 rib for the rest. It's not quite as snug a rib as it would be if the 2x2 was continued all the way down, but it's still more hug than a plain stockinette. Stockinette goes way faster though!!
I love the 2x2 to prevent sagging. How I do the instep varies and is mostly dependent upon how I feel once I've picked up the stitches for the gusset. How the yarn looks, too, helps me choose. If I like the way the ribbing on the cuff looks, I'll keep it going.
For fit nothing beats any form of 2X2 ribbing. I also like the baby cable. Slip stitch rib...garter rib...I usually carry it all the way down the foot. Bottom of foot is ST st. Basic socks are so under appreciated.
For looks, nothing beats a bit of lacey.
It doesn't really matter. Nothing beats socks. I'm teaching my knit group to knit socks after the holiday. I think I may be getting in over my head. So many have said they'd be there. There's over 20 of us.....Pray I have patience.
