Oh..these instructions!!
Hi Everybody, Can someone help me with these instructions?? I'm doing the right front border on a cardigan sweater with raglan sleeves. I picked up the stitches along the front edge, I now have 61 stitches on the needle. Now, here is the confusing part. I might add that this pattern was printed in the UK and that seems to make a difference in deciphering it....
STARTING WITH 2ND ROW OF 1X1 RIB WORK 2 ROWS.
NEXT ROW. RIB 2, CAST OFF 1 STITCH,(RIB 9, CAST OFF 1 STITCH) 5 TIMES, RIB 2.
NEXT ROW. RIB 3, CAST ON 1 STITCH, (RIB 10, CAST ON 1 STITCH) 5 TIMES, RIB 2.
WORK 2 MORE ROWS IN RIB.
CAST OFF IN RIB.
I believe I should have 6 rows of ribbing in total, not 8 as it would appear in these instructions. How do I cast off the stitch? Do I knit one, purl one and then what?? What do I cast off?? Thanks! Linda

You're making buttonholes. You cast off on one row, and then cast on on the next row--a hole for buttons.

For the cast off, use whatever stitch is in that part of the rib--work one, then the next and then put the first one off the end of your needle.

Maybe they're counting the pick up row and bind off as a row of the ribbing?

To me, this looks like 6 rows. Start with 2 rows of rib, then 'next row' then 'next row' then 2 more rows, right?

Looks like you are making a buttonhole band. To cast off you will work the set number of rib stitches in pattern at the beginning of the row, then work the next two stitch and pass the second stitch on the right needle over the first stitch on the right needle and drop it off completely. Then continue on with the instructions. You will do this everytime you need to cast 1 stitch off, and then when you need to cast one stitch on in the following row, I'd use a backward loop cast on.

Or you could watch the video on this site, it is kind of tricky , but you'll get it. IF I did, you will.
