Oh, it was a male craft. In fact, it was seen as a man's profession for hundreds of years. The knitting guilds of old old old are all male, like the tailor guilds, cobblers, etc...

Women would do it at home but it was for crude clothing. The educated knitters who were doing fancy stockings and the rest of the majority of knitters were professional males.

It's funny how things changed in the last 300 years.

I remember reading that Marc Jacob's final project for design school was a fabulous handknit sweater.

Thanks for the great video. I knit in public all the time. The best comment I've ever gotten was from an older woman at an assisted living residence who said a would make a good doughboy. (She was old enough to remember that male soldiers used to knit socks in the trenches in WW I).
