Best way to cast on for vertical stripes?

Hi, All.

To cast on for vertical stripes, is it best to make a new slip knot at each new color, or should I just switch to the new color at the appropriate stitch and leave a tail to weave in later? Is there a significant difference in appearance and sturdiness one way versus the other?

I'd think that if you start a new knot for each color, the stitches wouldn't be connected and you'd have gaps between them on the edge.

that's what bothered me about the cast on - the first row is not connected. I suppose you could fix that when you weave ends in but it bothered me and I decided to do a few rows of one color and then bring in stripes.
