How comfy are socks with
detail all the way down? I usually just make the basic sock but was thinking of giving these a try but kinda wondered how they would feel in a boot or a tennis shoe I kinda have the picture of taking off my boot and then my sock and having the pattern dented into my skin (like bed sheet face)

I prefer the foot of my sock to be in St st if I intend it to be worn in a regular shoe or if I'm gifting the socks. But, I'm pretty exclusively a clog wearer, so I don't mind patterning on the top of my socks, if I'm using very soft sock yarn, like Opal and the Leaves of Whimsy socks.

Thanks guys!!

I still haven't got that pattern or tried opal yarn

So could I follow the pattern till I get to that point and then follow my regular pattern? I'll have to give that a try and see..

OH yeah, dusti, you can do that with whatever pattern. If you find any pattern that you like, you can easily just knit the pattern on the leg and change to st st for the foot, afterall, really, who is gonna see the foot?!
Or, if you have a st pattern that you really like it's easy to transform it to knitting in the round and use it on the leg of your socks...socknitting is pretty much limited by your imagination! You can do so many things with socks, I get all knitty excited just thinking about it

I've done a couple pairs of patterned sock and wear them in regular shoes. So far no problems. They aren't uncomfortable, but a little bulkier which is a problem if my feet/ankles are swollen, but that's not the sock's fault. Go for the pattern. It makes knitting socks even more fun!

The only patterned sock I've done so far is Broadripple (from Knitty). When I wear them in some shoes (my riding boots especially), I end up with the imprint of the pattern on the tops of my feet. But it's not uncomfortable. And I might be a freak, because I get a mark on my face from leaning my cheek on my hand for two minutes. So just because it happens to me doesn't mean it'll do it to you.
