HELP WITH MEASURING

The first section of the poncho is to be 8" from beg. I understand what to do here. It is the foll sections Cont to inc 4 sts every other rnd til pc meas 6" from beg when measured straight up front and back from neck to point.. The next section says the same thing but meas. at 12". What does what is in bold mean?

Any help would be appreciated.

You know, that pattern just doesn't make sense. How can you work until it measure 8" and then until it measures 6" from beginning? Doesn't make sense...obviously we are missing something as to what their description of where to measure actually means. I'll see if some of the other experienced knitters here can take a look, otherwise you might want to try contacting them at berocco and see if anyone can clarify for you.

I think I may have just figured it out. The way that they have the increases placed, it makes the garment come to a point at the front center and the back center. You can see that in the picture. So when they say measure straight up back and front from neck to point, I think what they mean is this: measure from the lowest point of the knitting, it will be at the center front and center back (though you won't actually see that point yet because the stitches are on the needles, but you can see the center and where those increases go), and from that point, measure up to the neck, and this measurement will NOT include the cowl. You will just measure from that point up to where the body of the garment starts.

It does look wierd to me too.... here's my thought process:

The cowl is in garter stitch, and you knit it until it's 8 inches long

The body starts in stockinette stitch and has bands of garter stitch

Are the 6 inches supposed to be JUST the stockinette stitch of the body? So you knit 6 inches of st st and then you switch to garter stitch for the "garter stitch band"..... ?
