Knitting mitten thumb help

I need help with the thumbs of the mittens i am knitting, these are my fisrt pair and i do not understand what to do after i place sts on a holder, then cast on, could someone lead me to or lend me some help. i am using a three needle pattern for felt mittens. Thank you!

With many mitten patterns, you put the thumb stitches on a holder and knit the hand part of the mitten first. They have you cast on a few stitches on the hand side of the thumb. What is the problem that you're having?

You will put the thumb stitches on a holder (a waste yarn works best, in my opinion, because the stitches are already somewhat circular, a holder would be difficult to work around), then you will cast on the specified # of stitches to close the gap, then you will start knitting in the round again, ignoring the thumb stitches completely. You will finish the hand of the mitt and then go back to work the thumb. Sounds like you're right on track.
