Newbie question.

Hello,

I wabnt to knit myself a sweater and it will be my first time to knit an adult one , i would like to try sorrel from Rowan's book.

My question there is any difference whwn in the pattern is written down:
"dec(inc) 1 st at end " or decrease(inc) at each end 1st" because i have:

-dec 1 st at end of 11th and 2 foll 4th rows
98 sts and i will end up with 92 sts.:

that means i have to dec 1 st at end of 11th ,15 and 19 rows but if i do that i will have 95 sts and not 92

-Beg with a k row,work in st st,dec 1 st at each end of 3rd and every foll 4th row row until 84sts:

that means:
Row 1=k
Row 2=p
row 3=k and dec 1 st at the end
row 4=p and dec 1st at the end
row 7and 8 the same like r ow 3 and 4
row 11 and 12

i dont know if i m right.Please can someone tells me if i m right.[/b]

You need to decrease at EACH END of rows 11, 15 and 19--6 stitches total.

Beg with a k row,work in st st,dec 1 st at each end of 3rd and every foll 4th row row until 84sts:

decrease at the end of the third row, and after that at the end of every 4th row.

1-even
2-even
3 - dec
4 - even
5 - even
6 - even
7 - dec etc.

if i understand i will decrease at the beg and the end of row 11, 15 and 19?

is there any differece when it written in the pattern dec at the end and decrecase at each end

Yes, there is a difference. "Dec at end" means you only decrease at the end of the row. "Dec at each end" means that you decrease at the beginning and end of each row.

When you said at Each End , is it at the beg and the end of row 11, 15 and 19 or is not just decreasing at the beg of row 11-12: 15-16; 19-20 i am confused because it is no written at each end but a the end.

OK, I missed what you were asking. Let's see. I was assuming each end because that's how you'd end up with the right amount of stitches.

What part of the sweater are you doing where you have to 'decrease at end?' If it's a front of a cardigan, then you could very well have to only decrease at one end.

A back of a sweater would need decreases at both edges.

Beg with a k row,work in st st,dec 1 st at each end of 3rd and every foll 4th row row until 84sts:

For this instruction, you'd decrease at each end of the 3rd row, and then rows 7, 11, 15 etc.

Hi it s me again but this time with another question, i m having some trouble to understand this part of the pattern:

Shape back neck
Next Row: k32 and turn, leaving rem sts on a holder.
Work each side of neck separtely.
Cast off 3 sts at beg of next and foll 3 alt rows ,ending with RS facing for next row. 20 sts.
Shape shoulder
Cats off 8 sts at beg of next row , then 3 sts at the beg of foll row.
Cast off rem 9 sts.
With Rs facing , rejoin yarn to rem sts , cast off centre 12 sts , K to end.Complete to match first side reversing shapings.

My questions are:
For the shape back neck and the shoulder when i will have to cast off , should i cast off like we generaly do i mean , cast off at the beg of one row and turn and cast off again at the beg of next row or i have just to cast off at the beg of one row and waiting for casting off the other alt row given in the pattern because i m working separately each side.

I don t know if it does make sens what i wrote if not i will try to explain clearly.

You're working one shoulder at a time on this piece, so you'll do all your neck cast offs at the beginning of the row where the neck is.

The shoulder shaping will be cast off at the beginning of all the rows where the shoulder edge starts the row.

First you'll do the neck decreases, then the shoulder decreases.
