making stitches makes a hole?

I was knitting a hat and in the ribbing I did 10 stitches fewer than the body of the hat. To increase, I evenly spaced out the increases around and I picked up the yarn in between the stitches to M1. this left a small hole for each stitch in that round. It is fine, but when you put the hat on, if one of those holes is on your forehead, you can see it.

So my question is, is there a method of inc. or M1 that won't leave a small hole? I have done a YO before and that leaves a bit of a whole too. is K in the front and back better?

When you do a M1 increase, and lift the bar from front to back, you should knit into the small loop at the back rather than into the bar in front--I'd bet that's what your hole comes from.

I didn't understand what you meant, but I found a video for it in the Basic Techniques section after you said what to do.

I took a class once on making a stuffed bear. The pattern was full of M1 left and M1 right increases--I remember the instructor saying that if the M1 was hard to knit into after you placed the bar on the left needle that you were doing it correctly. It is hard because you have twisted the stitch to prevent having a hole.
