suppose everyone has a favorite technique, but I always slip the first stitch as if to purl and always knit the last stitch. Word of caution: On a knit row....hold the yarn toward the front before you slip that first stitch purlwise, then move it to the back between the two needles.
I like the chain I get on both edges when I do it this way and then you can seam using a mattress stitch.
Is slipping the first purtwise and knitting the last not just a decorative edge for scarfs etc? It makes a chain and therefore is it not harder to seam the edge? Do you slip the first stitch purlwise no matter if the stitch is a purl or a knit? And do you knit the last stitch no matter if the stitch is a knit or a purl? I am just going to make a sweater and wondering what to do with the first and last. What if there is a textured pattern throughout, do you still slip the first purlwise and Knit the last?
