Knitting Stipes --carrying yarn up the side??

I am making a hat in garter stitch. There are 4 colors--each one knitted for 2 rows. The instructions say to carry the colors up along the side edge ntil the last stripe is completed, then cut all but one. So I knitted the 1st 2 rows with one color, then at the side, just started knitting with the 2nd color (whas I to twist the threads together or anything?), Then I did the 3rd color --2 more rows --again, I'm just letting color 1 & 2 just hang ont the sides --Are they to be twisting or anything with the others--and if so, how do I go about that?? I'm just planning on bringing up the 1st color after the 4th color's 2 rows are knitted. Is this right?? I could really use a video, but can't find one that seems to match this scenerio! Thanks!

According to the directions you are doing it correctly.

I don't know about having to carry along the sides for 6 rows, though... that seems like a lot to me.
