sock: dividing stitches onto 3 needles

Okay, I'm makin' a sock. I've finished the heel flap and have picked up stitches on both sides of it. I'm trying to divide my stitches back onto three needles, but don't know how to get the two sides that aren't the foot-front to have an equal number of stitches without my working yarn being in the MIDDLE of one of the rows. How can I divide up my stitches onto three needles and have my working yarn at the end of one of the needles?

Okay, here are some options:
1. Knit along your needles until you get to a point where you can divide the stitches evenly.
2. Don't divide the stitches evenly; instead, place a marker where the "end of needle X" should be, to mark your gusset decreases. This way, if you have a problem with "ladders" (loose stitches between the needles), you can vary the number of stitches per needle.
