Baste together
Hi there,

I am working on a cardigan for myself and I am just doing the collar. It says I need to "baste shaped edges tog" Can anyone explain that to me? Is it basically telling me to just attatch the collar to the sweater or is there a special way this needs to be done?

Thanks for your help.
Nicole

Do they refer to the shaped edges as a particular part of the collar? Is there a link to the pattern? I don't recall ever seeing a pattern that refers to basting. I think of that as a temporary stitch.

I'd think that if you were just to attach the collar, then they'd say that.

The pattern I am using is a Bernat pattern. I bought the book at Walmart. I haven't searched for the pattern online.

It says..... "With circular needle, beg at center back neck, cas on 26 sts. Working back and forth across needle in rows work 2 rows in K2 P2 ribbing as given for back.

Shape collar: Keeping cont of ribbing cast on 3 sts beg next 36 rows. 134 sts.

Work 6 rows even in ribbing. Place markers at each end of last row for fold line.

Work further 6 rows in ribbing. Cast off 3 sts beg next 34 rows. 26 sts. Work 1 row even. Cast off.

Fold collar in half along fold line and baste shaped edges tog.

Sew shaped edge of collar to neck edge placing 6 even rows before fold line at each end along top of Button and Buttonhole Bands."

I was confused about the centre back neck part. I wasn't sure if I was supposed to pick up and knit stitchs from the back of sweater or if I was supposed to do it as a seperate piece. When I had to do the button hole bands it said pick up and knit. But at this part it didn't say that. Hopefully I am doing it correctly. The lady who usually helps me at work is off on Vacation this week. She is back from Cuba on Tuesday so I wanted to have it all done by the time she got back.

If you can give me any advice I would appreciate it!!!

Thanks,
Nicole

It looks like the collar is knit separately, and then sewn on.

The center back looks like it's the center back of the collar and that you start with the 26 stitches and make it wider and wider as you go. It will have a curved bottom edge as it's on your needle.
