Purchasing circular needles for Magic Loop sock knitting
If I need to purchase 2 - size 2 circular's to learn magic loop sock knitting, can I buy a 16" and a 24" instead of 2 of the same length?

Doah, I was describing the wrong thing. I'm learning the 2 circ needle method for socks.

It's actually advised that you get two different lengths. That way you can tell them apart while you're knitting AND you get the added benefit of not doubling your needles unnecessarily. Sounds like a good idea to me.

I'm doing my 1st pair of socks on 2 24" circs. I don't know if 16s would be long enough but hey give it a try who knows it might just work

I use 2 16" circs for mine and they're plenty long for me. YMMV, though.

There are different schools as to what length circs you should get. Some, as you have seen, say 2 different lengths, some 2 - 24", some 2 - 16"; all in all, it's what you are most comfortable knitting.
My preference, 2 - 24 in. circs. I prefer this length, the actual needle part is longer than on the 16" circs.
When I 1st started buying circs for socknitting I bought 16" and 24" so I'd have each length needle but quickly discovered that I was more comfortable knitting with the 24" circ, so i bought more 24" circs for socknitting. Shoot, when I couldn't find 24" circs for my socknitting I bought 32"!
All that to say....2 - 24 in circs for me
