Need Help With Partial Fingerless Gloves

I'm trying to follow this pattern: http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEsummer05/PATTcigar.html

However instead of the fingers shown that are fingerless, I would like the index, pinkie and thumb to be fingerless while the middle and ring finger are covered. Can any advise how I might look at this pattern differently to achieve my goal? I'm new at making gloves and need lots of advice

All of the fingers are at least partially knitted, so on the ones that you want covered, just follow the same directions as the ones that are so in the pattern -- for the ones that you want to be completely covered, the pattern says to knit in rounds until you reach the tip of the wearer's finger, and then two decrease rounds as it describes. For the ones that you want fingerless, knit in rounds until you reach the bottom of first knuckle.

Also in the pattern in mentions "place next # sts on waste yarn" What does this mean place on waste yarn? Does this mean put it on a stitch holder?
