Cable on circular needles? Or save me from myself!
What happens if I try to put a horizontal cable on the hat I am knitting on circular needles? I found this pattern:
Row 1 k2,p2,k9,p2,k2
Row 2 p2,k2,p9,k2,p2
Row 3 k2,p2,sl next 3 sts onto cable needle leaving needle in front of work, k3, k3 sts from cable needle, k3,p2,k2
Row 4 Repeat row 2
row 5 repeat row 1
row 6 repeat row 2
row 7 repeat row 3
So my question is: will this work on circulars? I have 130 sts and about 4 inches of knitting done. Could I do 8 repeats on each row (and just knit the 4 extra sts, two at either end) and end up with this looking cool or will this be a nightmare? I may need to be saved from myself here!!!

Row 1 k2,p2,k9,p2,k2
Row 2 p2,k2,p9,k2,p2
Row 3 k2,p2,sl next 3 sts onto cable needle leaving needle in front of work, k3, k3 sts from cable needle, k3,p2,k2

You'd have to reverse the knits and purls on the even rows, but you should be able to do it on circs just fine.

Rows 1,2,4,5,and 6 -- k2, p2, k9, p2, k2

Rows 3 and 7 as written.

Why do I need to reverse those rows? (Clearly never having made cables before, especially not on circulars)

When you work on circulars, you're always knitting the front of the piece. You don't turn it over, so you don't have to work the purls on the back.

Actually, once you can see them you can just knit the knits and purl the purls on everything.

Will putting a cable in the middle of the hat make it weirdly shaped or do you think it will be ok? Thanks, Ingrid!

I think it would look fine. If it turns out that you don't like it for some reason, then take it out--you're not making a queen-sized afghan
