I have a paper and pencil sitting next to me when I'm doing something that needs keeping track of. If it has rows by number on the pattern I just put the numbers down on the paper and then cross each one off as I go. That way if I stop in the middle I know exactly what row I'm on.
As for holes in cables... they become less obvious as you go further up usually. What pattern are you doing? I'm making this cabled afghan
and further down the post I've added some help for ribbing that I really think is helping the cables, too. They are very tight now.
