First time using circulars and stitch marker

Hello,
I am working on the turtle neck to a dog sweater, and it is my first time using circular needles. I put a stitch marker after my first round, but every time I pass the stitch marker, I end up with a wierd yarn over type of a thing. Is there an art to using a stitch marker? Thanks!

When you get to the stitch marker, just slip it off of your left needle onto your right needle.

What jane said. And you don't have to do anything different with your yarn than the other stitches.

I thought the idea of stitch markers were stupid but oh how I have mended my ways. I love love love them now. Are you sure you are not making a little latter type deal by not making the stitch tight enough around the marker? Or you could be accidentally changing from knit to purl without knowing it because you are focused on the marker. Well I hope you work it out.
