Quick Baby Sweater

This is the first thing other than a hat and a pair os socks done on straight needles that I have ever done. I think I might have bitten off more than I can chew with this pattern. http://www.minidata.co.nz/major/freepatt/patt01.htm
Here are the directions where I am stuck.
**Now is the time to divide things up If you prefer it put each section on a separate length of spare yarn - I don’t usually bother if I am knitting the sleeves first. BUT if you want to make this totally seamless, see the note at the end.

Sleeve: Slip sts from first (front) section up to marker (should be 22 sts) on to right hand needle.
Cast on 2 sts, knit across sleeve section (27 sts), turn and cast on 2 sts, purl back.
Continue to work in stockinette st for 22 rows.

I have the first batch of slip stitches on the right needle like she said...My question is how in the world do I get the yarn which is now on the right needle to the left needle to cast on 2 stitches? How do you knit something you can't get too. Should I forget this pattern at this time? It seems more advanced than what I am. I just wanted to make this for my first grandchilds Christmas. But I feel like I am banging my head against the wall ! Thanks to whomever can try to help me.

Looks to me like you're going to have to *knit* across those first 22 stitches--unless I'm missing something, that's the only way to get your working yarn over to the stitches for the sleeve.

So, I don't slip stitch them to the right needle like it says? I just knit them and then I do the sleeve part. I am getting so confused. It has taken me 2 days to get this far because I was off on stitches and had to start over. Thanks for the help. I hope I can do this but if not I could always just pull my hair out. Hey I attached a pic to the first post what happened to it...It was a pic of my sweater. trying again

I would knit across those first 22 stitches, then slide them over to a stitch holder. Then do your cast on and work the sleeve stuff. Does that make sense?

I just read the rest of your post--LOL. Don't pull your hair out! My first sweater, also for a baby, was an unbelievable stream of knitting and then ripping out! My second sweater I knit entirely, then realized I did it on the wrong sized needles! It was totally hole-y instead of a nice, drapey fabric. Insane! I ripped the WHOLE THING out and started over! It was ridiculous.

I just can't get a visual on all this. I crochet all the time but this knitting is driving me insane!!!! Does a sweater really need any sleeves??? LOLOLOL
Not sure what to do with any of it. These things are supposed to be for Christmas and I should have started last year I guess!

Orrrr.... Slip those 22 stitches to a stitch holder, cast on 2 stitches on the RH needle and knit across the back. I've done the adult version of this sweater, I think. Or one like it. It's not that difficult, bunch up the sleeve stitches so you can bring the back stitches close to the front stitches.

Okay, I remembered how I did this - I finished the sleeves first, then picked up the stitches from the underarm instead of casting on and finished the body. Worked great and it was easier because there was no seaming, just filling in any holes in the underarm where everything was joined.

Ok girls, I have knitted across the front part and put them on a stitch holder...now here comes the dumb question of the day...HOW do I CO the 2 stitches I need? Do I just M1..is that what it means? Or, do I knit in front in back of 2 stitches? I tried CO like I do and IT LAUGHED AT ME...as to say what the heck r u trying to do woman!!!!
