un-cast-off?

I have never tried to undo a cast-off and i can get how it would be done hypothetically, but i'm afraid i'm going to mess it up and lose stitches and such.... is there a trick to it? i cast off on a larger needle, but not large enough, to tight of a diameter still....

I've done it, and once you get that first stitch out, the stitches just pop out one by one. You can pick them up as they come out, and you won't have to worry about losing any. I think that they're pretty easy to grab because they're a bit stretched out from passing over the needle.
