difference in Cotton and Acrylic?

Just wondering if theres a difference in guage between cotton and acrylic??? This will be my first project working with cotton, only used acrylic before..

i would definitely do a swatch if it is something that you need to be able to fit. cotton can be a bit tough to work with as it isn't terribly stretchy. i find that i tend to knit a LOT looser on cotton than i do on just about anything else.

thats a problem... Its from a beginner book that came with yarn, and needles and a pattern for a bunch of stuff...It doesnt have a guage to go by.. its a baby hat with ribbing on the bottom, and then stockinette...

Any advice?

Does it give the size in inches or cm for the finished product? You could figure out your gauge from that....
