pls help w/ sl1 wyif (slip stitch double knit) edging

I'm doing a practice swatch for Alison's Scarf:

Right side: K1, sl1wyif, K1
Wrong side: sl1wyif, K1, sl1wyif

a nice neat picture-frame-type edge is coming out on the WS.
I even tried "reversing" the directions - doing the RS instructions for the WS and vice-versa.
no workie, a frame edge is still developing on the WS.


anyone know what I'm doing wrong?
does "sl1 wyif" simply mean "slip as if to purl"?

sl wyif means to slip a stitch with the yarn in front, so the yarn will end up crossing in front of the slipped stitch.

so would it look like this?

RS:
knit 1,
bring yarn to front as if to purl,
slip next stitch purlwise,
bring yarn to back to knit,
knit 1

WS:
slip next stitch purlwise,
bring yarn to back to knit,
knit 1,
bring yarn in front as if to purl,
slip next stitch purlwise

argh, I think the problem might be that I'm slipping them purlwise.
I'll try slipping all knitwise.

It looks like you've got the right idea. I'd have slipped them purlwise, too, but do whatever looks best.

either way - slipped purlwise or knitwise, I don't get the nice frame look but I think I'm over it. :D
