Just for the heck of it,
try knitting a swatch with plain ordinary smooth worsted weight yarn on size 7 or 8 needles. You'll be able to see how the stitches are formed, where you're sticking the needle and where it's emerging. It'll quickly become second nature.
Then you can go back to the big fuzzy stuff without feeling that you're fighting your way through a jungle with a dull machete.
And if you think it 's a waste of time to knit a swatch, just call it a potholder.
