Just for the heck of it,
try knitting a swatch with plain ordinary smooth worsted weight yarn on size 7 or 8 needles. You'll be able to see how the stitches are formed, where you're sticking the needle and where it's emerging. It'll quickly become second nature.

Then you can go back to the big fuzzy stuff without feeling that you're fighting your way through a jungle with a dull machete.

And if you think it 's a waste of time to knit a swatch, just call it a potholder.

I appreciate all of the encouraging and informative replies. Please forgive me for not responding to each one individually, but I am in the midst of knitting and taking short breaks for annoying things like eating, cleaning house, etc

Good point!

On some forums it's considered rude to not acknowledge each and every reply, on others it isn't. Being new here I didn't want to hurt anyone's feelings or have them think they are being ignored.
