shetland triangle shawl from wrap style - Help!!!!

I am confused by the first set of instructions!!
first you knit 6 rows of 2 stitches then this -" K2, rotate piece 90 degrees clockwise, pick up and knit 1 st in each of the 3 garter ridges along selvedge of piece, "

I can slip a stitch thru the garter selvedge, but how do you pick it up and knit it?? any link to tutorial on this site that would help?

Picking up a stitch the way you're doing it is the same as 'pick up and knit' the stitch. Just pick them up through the edge and consider yourself done with that direction.
