When you look at your knitting, you'll see that the knit stitches look like V's and the purls look like bumps. When there is a V below the loop on the left needle, then you knit it. When there is a bump, you purl.
It sometimes is hard to tell after the first row which is which, but for k1p1 ribbing on an even number of stitches, you just k1p1 across on both sides.
