machine washable handspun

I recently learned how to spin and like to give my yarn and knitted items to loved ones, but don't want them to have to hand wash the items! How do I make my handspun yarn machine washable, at least, and maybe even machine dryable?

I've never spun my own stuff, but my guess is that if you could find some way to launder it (without making a total mess!) before you knit, that might work. Sort of a "pre-shrinking"? Of course, if it's wool, it will probably felt together, so maybe I have no idea what I'm talkiing about!!
