Second color working in the round?

I'd like to make a baby beanie and I was thinking of adding a patch of color in the front. It didn't take me long to figure out that it doesn't quite work the way I thought.

Do I have to knit flat then sew the front and back halves together? Or is there a trick I just haven't figured out?

You can't really work regular intarsia in the round. If the main color goes all the way through the motif, though, there is a way to do it in the round.

If that's the case, I'd be happy to explain how.

Nope. I just wanted a single patch of color in the front of the hat. I'll hunt down a beanie pattern that comes in two parts.

I was hoping to make a beanie that I can add ears to, and the front part look like a mokey face (that's the other color). If it is done with front and back, it should be safe to add ears at the seams, right?

Sure! Or you could knit one flat with a seam down the back and knit add the ears.
