If the skien of yarn says to use a US 6 needle to get 5.25 stitches to the inch, but the pattern using the same yarn says to use US 5 for 6.25 stiches, but I want to use a yarn that using US 6 needles I would get 5.5 stiches to the inches what would my guage be if I used US 5 needles. Does anyone follow? I am so confused.
The only way to really check your gauge is to do a swatch on the needles and yarn you want to use. Everyone knits at a slightly different tension, to the gauge on a ball of yarn or the needle size recommended in a pattern are just guidelines.
