Help with Cable knitting

Hi,
I'm new to the forum. So hello to everyone.

Well, I need help with learning how to cable knit.
I saw the video, and am aware of the process of going across one row, but am totally lost as to what happens after.

In other words, as in the video, if you perl the first three stiches, knit the next 6 stitches (while using the cable needle to twist the cable), what happens in the next row? How exactly do you get the nice twirling cable?

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Knitting cables is a lot like knitting ribbing except for the one row where you cross the stitches over. Find a pattern for a simple rib and practice it.
Try this - R 1 - k3, p3, k6, p3, k3. R2 - p3, k3, p6, k3, p3. Repeat these rows 2 more times, 6 rows. Next row - k3, p3, sl 3 sts to an extra needle, let them flow out of the way behind the needle, k 3, then k the 3 on the extra needle, p3, k3. You've made a cable! Next row, repeat R 2 and keep going....

the cable twist is usually done in 1 row. you may work maybe 3 rows "normally", then do the cable row. you will then work 3 rows normally. different patterns call for different frequencies of the cable row.

remember, if it says "cable 6", you will put HALF that amount on the cable needle. so if the cable is 6 stitches wide, you will put 3 stitches on the cable needle.

to do the twist row using your example:

-purl 3 stitches to make the pre-cable background
-put the next 3 stitches (from the left needle) on the cable needle
-either hold the cable needle to the front of the work (for a left twisting cable) or to the back of the work (for a right twisting cable). your instructions will tell you which side to use. they will say something like "C6L" or "C6R"
-knit the next 3 stitches that are *not on the cable needle*
-knit the 3 stitches that are on the cable needle, using the cable needle as your left needle (in other words, you are knitting directly OFF the cable needle)
-purl 3 stitches for the post-cable background

that row will create the twist. if you work the next 3 rows "normally", then do another cable row, you will see the cable emerge.

Thanks for the reply. But what do you mean by "normally"
So after doing that first row...how do I go about doing the next row?

and btw..what is ribbing? How is that done?

Ribbing is alternating purl sts with knit sts, like k2,p2 or k3, p3. Normally would be knitting the next row in the pattern you're using. In the little sampler pattern I posted, only one row makes the twist/cable, the rest of the rows are the pattern that set up and form the background for the cable. Try doing that pattern on some spare yarn just to practice. CO 18 sts and work R 1 and 2 three times each. Then do the cable row, and work R 2 on the next one after that. Then repeat R 1 and 2 again and on the sixth row, repeat the cable row.

sorry. by "normally" I mean non-cable-twist-rows. using suzeeq's example:

R1 - k3, p3, k6, p3, k3.
R2 - p3, k3, p6, k3, p3.
Repeat these rows 2 more times, 6 rows.

THEN do the cable twist row.
