"Gauge"

I'm relatively new and am just learning to read patterns. But I can't find a single glossary or dictionary that defines "gauge" What does this mean:
"Gauge = 2sts + 4 rows" I know that sts means stiches. But I don't get what this is telling me. Is this related to the needle size? Help! -Renee
