Beginner's pattern question

I am new here and new to knitting. After several failed attempts to learn knitting from a book, I was referred here by experienced knitters and I finally got it by watching the great videos on this site.

Now for my question:

I am halfway through my first project, a scarf, in this stitch:

Looking ahead to my next project, I was thinking about doing something in this stitch:

But on the link under King Charles Brocade stitch, where it provides a scarf pattern, it says:

Note: Knit the first and last 3 sts of every row.

CO 31 sts.

Does this mean that I actually cast on 37 stitches, allowing for the 3 on the beginning and end of the row to be knitted, or do I ignore the first 3 stitches of the actual 31 to be done and knit them instead?

Thanks in advance!

Just CO 31. The math is already done. It's a multiple of 12+1. So you have 24 plus the 6 and the extra 1 which equals 31.

When asking questions ALWAYS post the name and a link for the pattern if you have it.

Thanks, Jan.

I see now what you mean, that the extra 6 stitches are already in there.

I guess I was making it harder than it really was.
