cable question
can i use a straight needle to hold my stiches when cabling? or do i need the open ends of dpn/cable needles for slipping the stiches back on?

You really do need something with two ends--you pick up the stitches with one end and knit from the other. If you had to, you could pick up the stitches with the point of the regular needle and then put them back on the working needle to knit them.
