a pattern for a Priest's stole?

does anyone have any ideas for making a priest's stole? this would be a gift for a friend who is celebrating 25 years of ordination.
i'd like to make something that is lightweight (linen yarn?), subtle, and tasteful. the garment has to lay flat -- and may need to have a fabric backing -- your ideas about how to do this are welcome!

(i came across one pattern online but it was "dull" -- not much interest in it.)
