Need help to understand Pattern
Hi
I am once again stumped and need some help
The pattern is as follows:
One-Button Cardigan

14 sts = 3 inches in pat st. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE.
STITCH EXPLANATION:

PATTERN (multiple of 8 sts plus 5):
Row 1 (RS): K.
Row 2: P.
Row 3: K 1, p 3, *k 5, p 3; rep from * across, end k 1.
Row 4: P 1, k 3, *p 5, k 3; rep from * across, end p 1.
Row 5: K 1, yo, k3tog, yo, *k 5, yo, k3tog, yo; rep from * across, end k 1.
Rows 6 & 8: P.
Row 7: K.
Row 9: K 5, *p 3, k 5; rep from * across.
Row 10: P 5, *k 3, p 5; rep from * across.
Row 11: K 5, *yo, k3tog, yo, k 5; rep from * across.
Row 12: P.
Rep Rows 1-12 for pat.

SWEATER
BACK: Cast on 93 (101, 109, 117, 125, 133) sts. Work in k 1, p 1 rib for 6 rows. Beg with Row 1, work even in pat until piece meas approx 25 (26, 27, 28, 29, 30) in. from beg.
Last row: Bind off 32 (34, 36, 38, 40, 42) sts, work 29 (33, 37, 41, 45, 49) sts and sl on a holder, bind off rem 32 (34, 36, 38, 40, 42) sts.

LEFT FRONT: Cast on 45 (53, 53, 61, 61, 69) sts. Work in k 1, p 1 rib for 6 rows. Beg with Row 1, work even in pat until piece meas 16 (16½, 17, 17 1/2, 18, 18½) in. from beg.
Shape V-neck: Keeping to pat, dec 1 st at center Front on next row, then every 4 (3, 3, 3, 3, 3) rows 12 (18, 16, 22, 20, 26) times -- 32 (34, 36, 38, 40, 42) sts. Work even until piece meas same as Back to shoulders. Bind off rem sts.RIGHT FRONT: Work to correspond to Left Front, rev shaping.

Ok...here is my dilemma..
When the left front measured 16" that was row 12.
The next row, I began my decrease. This was row 1 and I knitted the last 2 stitches together.
I then followed row 2, 3 and 4. On row 5, I followed the pattern and on this row, I was supposed to decrease at the end of the row, but since there were 3 stitches left, I knitted them all together for the decrease.
I am not really sure if this is right or not so before I keep going on, I would love to get some help on this pattern. Also, just to make sure I am reading this right...On the first row of the neck shaping, I decreased at the end of row 1 (i knitted 2 stitches together). Then the pattern says decrease one stitch every 4 rows, 12 times. So, since I decreased on row 1, I assume I shud decrease on rows 5, 9, 13, 17, 21 etc. until I have 32 stitches.
Thanks for your help.

If you started with 45 stitches, and decreased once on the next row and then on rows 5, 9, 13, 17, 21, 25, 29, 33, 37, 41, 44 and 48 , you should have decreased a total of 13 stitches, which would leave you with 32.

I'm not sure what you mean that you had 3 left. Regardless of where the pattern stitch ends, you should just decrease by one.

HI
On the row that I had 3 left, I did a YO then I was supposed to knit 3 tog. So, thats what I did...I knitted those last 3 together, rather than knitting 2 together which is what I would ordinarily do to make a decrease.

One other problem I see is that the BACK of the sweater was 138 rows. If I follow the pattern now for the left front so that I end up with 32 stitches after decreasing 12 times, the length of my left front will be LONGER than the 138 rows or 25" from the beginning..so what do I do?

Thanks for your help
