last knit stitch before a purl stitch never pretty!
i have this problem. whenever i go from a knit stitch to a purl stitch, the knit stich is always loose, clunky, not neat, and ugly in general.

so when i do ribbing, the left most knit stich is ugly.

when i do cables, the left most knit stitch is loose, and it kinda ruins the whole cable.

so, basically the last knit stich always looks a little loose. so i pull the yarn very tight before going to the purl stitch, keeping everything tight tight tight. still looks bad.

is this something that just is? does it go away with washing and blocking?

I have the same problem... your purl stitch may be too tight. Try knitting that last knit stitch through the back loop to tighten it up.
