Video iPod/Podcast questions...
I know many of you have iPods, so I thought I would ask here.

My husband and I just bought two video iPods. We talked ourselves into buying the video versions becuase the kids could watch their videos on them, and we wouldn't need to buy and bring DVD players for the LONG plane rides ahead this summer. It's all about the kids! The sacrificies we make for our children!

Anyway, I need to find a case before I destroy the thing. Any recommendations?

Also...I saw a previous thread about podcast recommendations. Anything new to add to the list for me? Anything you think a three year old and a five year old would enjoy?

I have a Rhino case and it's great: clear plastic on the front, aluminum on the back, very sturdy. Comes with a removable swivel belt clip. It is pricey but in my opinion very well worth it. I could probably drop my ipod on concrete and be fine.

For podcasts, here's my list:

Cast On
Stash n Burn
Its a Purl, Man
Unwound
Ready, Set, Knit

There are others I haven't heard yet too

What I use isn't really a case but a covering - it's a silicone 'iskin' and has a plexiglass screen cover. I was afraid I'd keep removing it from a real case and then drop it (tha't what happened with a PDA)

Depends on what you need out of a case. I forget the brand I had but it clipped on, and was clear plastic. It was a HUGE pain to get on and off, and I eventually stopped using it because I got an alarm clock that played through the iPod. (Which I've stopped using because I think it was causing the hard-drives on my iPods to crash and burn. I'm on my third in just under a year--and they all crashed similarly, and the problems started AFTER I started using the alarm. Stopped using it, no problems. Thank God for warranties.)

Where was I? Oh right, it depends on what you want. They have some that are sort of rubbery, they have socks (which if you're going to use that, you might as well knit one.) I don't think that one is necessarily better than they other, it just depends on how you plan on using it. There are looooads of choices in an Apple store or on their website.

I don't have a case, but I clearly need to get one!

Our favorites are the National Geographic video podcasts. My kids are 5 and 1 1/2, and they love to watch them - short snippets with great names like "snake vs. bat." If your kids aren't into nature shows, though, this may not help...

I have this this one . It works good for me. I can't remember how much I paid for it, I don't believe it was over $20.

No recommendations for you, but i did want to pop in and say that watching videos on the iPod drains the battery incredibly quickly. We've only used it for that once or twice (watching Spongebob at the ski lodge while older DD was in skiing lessons), but I think that the battery lasted only about an hour.

Just thought you should know, since you mentioned a long plane ride!

We're hoping on the international flights, we'll have outlets available. For the other flights, we'll just let them watch one iPod at a time. Hopefully between the two iPods, a laptop, movies on the plane, coloring books, and toys, we'll have entertained kids. Is that wishful thinking or what?!

Thanks for the case and podcast recommendations!

You can buy external battery packs - I just googled that and found one that specifically says: "It's a great solution for long plane flights"

I am paranoid about the tiniest smear on my ipod. Most electronics stores etc. should have a good selection but what I did was cut out a hollowed book into the shape of my Nano, surround it with foam, it fits in there perfectly and the cover closes with velcro. The book also has a separate compartment for headphones and slits so you can leave the earbuds plugged in all the time, and listen to them while both are still inside the closed book. I could definitely throw the book across the room without damaging the ipod. No stress!
