Bernat Super Value experience??

I just got some GREAT toy patterns, and I'm going to practice on them first with Bernat Super Value yarns first, before using pricier natural fibers. I've searched online, and Bernat Super Value (& Berella) seems to be the cheapest AND have the most (useful) # of colors AND f/Joanns.com's reviews - is relatively good quality.

I'll be giving away the "practice" versions when I'm done, so I wanted it to be decent quality, and washable (for children).

I can't find those Bernat lines in stores here, so I'm asking the KH community for their opinions.

Yay? Nay? Better, cheaper, good colors out there?? Where to look??

i have some bernat acrylic.. its the sweet stripes? its pretty and not too rough. and a great price. i bought mine from wal-mart

Hi Jeanius! Whew, I was starting to think Bernat SV was a dirty word here, or that it didn't exist outside of my universe - surely others here have used it??

It looks like Super Value's a different line than Sweet Stripes, although it does have some ombres in there. I was wondering as to how it feels (am very tactile), and how it holds up. I knitted a Pasha the Penguin in Caron Simply Soft, and while it feels great, it seemed to pill/fuzz easily w/minimal handling.

Although Joann's lists a whole bunch on their webiste, they had none in their store here, and Hancock's doesn't carry it. Am off to Wal-Mart to fondle, hopefully!! [/i]

Well, darn, that was a bust. Both Wal-Marts in town have barely ANYthing in yarn, and no more fabric departments.

KMart in my neck of the woods is now selling Bernat. I've used it for making baby blankets for our church and was happy with it. Makes me laugh to think that back in the late 50's and 60's Bernat was considered high-end yarn and sold in the best yarn departments!

I like Bernat. But that's probably only because it's the only yarn I've ever used. lol. Still, why get spoiled with expensive yarn when I like the Bernat stuff just fine and get to pay way less for it. My thing is if I like the color and the feel of it I'll buy it. And if it's cheap then i've found a deal. I know that If I ever use the expensive stuff I'll probably never look back, but really, I'm a highschool student and money is not exactly something that I have a lot of. Maybe later I'll be able to afford the more "upper end" yarn, but for now Bernat is fine for me. It's still a quality product even if it is from places like Walmart or Zellars. Just because you use cheap yarn doesn't make you any less of a knitter. As long as you like what you're doing it shouldn't matter.
To answer your question about where to find Bernat yarn I think you would have an easier time if you lived in Canada because (at least for the area I live in) Bernat is in quite the abundence. If you go to their website www.bernat.com and go to the store locator you might be able to find a store that stocks it near you. Also, some of their yarns can be bought online from places like Mary Maxim.com or Joann.com

You're right, Yvonne, looks like knitting-warehouse.com's got the best prices online right now, and things looking the way they are, that's going to be my chosen route. Although, I may swing by Kmart and Michael's tomorrow to fondle and compare .

And Cookie - I completely agree w/your rationale - and please, enjoy it while you can! Don't get sucked into yarn you can't afford! (like I do, all too often
