To substitute yarn...
Hi all! I am a brand new knitter, and happy to join the club!

I have little question (of course):

I have chosen my next project, the Monk Satchel (http://www.interweave.com/knit/books...agsExcerpt.pdf) but unfortunately, the yarn used (Brown Sheep Cotton Fleece http://brownsheep.com/cf.htm) does not sell in my corner of the world. Normally I would consider buying online, but because I intend to change the colors, I am hesitant to do so (hard to tell the actual shade of a yarn through a computed screen).

Is there a website/book/technique/advice/anything please to help find a suitable substitute? As I said I am quite new, and I am still working on the premise that to disobey the pattern or deviate from it in any way means certain failure. Well that's a little strong, but I just don't feel that with 3 scarves, 2 stuffed pigs, 1 needle case and 1 pair of slippers under my belt, i have a good enough "sense of yarn" to just wing this.

Please help?

Oh, I also want to add that I am self taught, and the videos on this website have been a real life saver for me. Thank you for taking the time to do them for new knitters such as myself.

Thanks,

S.

Welcome!

www.yarndex.com is a good source for finding comparable yarns.

If you get the right gauge and have the right yardage, then you can pretty much subsititue anything you want.
