Circular Needles
I am a new knitter and trying a shawl pattern using circular needles, how do I do this without it connecting together? I know it has to be a very easy answer but I am on my 4th attempt and just not getting it. Any help for me?

so you are using circs to knit a flat piece? if so, then at the end of the row, you need to turn the work around, as if you are knitting with straights. if you just keep going, you are going to join it in the round.

hope that helps,
Lori

Thank you for the info! Still being slow on the visual, when I begin after my cast on's, the cast on tail and beginning yarn will be at the top, I now flip to the other end and start with the pattern. The yarn will just end up seperate at the end of each row? Sorry so many question's, just beginning!

let me try again...

cast on your stitches, then knit/purl/whatever back across the row. when you get to the end of the row, turn your work around and knit/purl/whatever back down the row. just like you are using straight needles.

clear as mud?

Do exactly what dakatzmeow says.
If it still isn't clear, give yourself this visual:
you are knitting on straight needles; there is no cable between them.
At the end of the row, switch the left needle the right hand and
the right needle to the left.
And go back in the direction you came from.

It is confusing at first - I understood the concept (barely) but still got a bit flustered when confronted with the reality of it. Just try to ignore the cable and pretend they're straights. You'll have the hang of it in just a few rows!

circular knitting
Thanks to you all, I got it!! The suggestion for treating it like I was knitting on straight needles and forgetting the cord was the clicker. That was great guys! I knew it had to be something so easy that I couldn't get it, that's embarrassing.

Thank You Again!
